DIY Copper Skeletons

I’ve been trying to stay intentional about what seasonal items I bring into our home. We’ve lived in our 1400 square foot house for 8 years and I find that if I don’t stay on top of how many things we’re holding onto, our home starts to feel very cramped. This year, my goal is to only buy consumable seasonal items (I was very inspired by Myquillyn Smith’s new book “Welcome Home”) like real pumpkins, food, candles, etc. - things that don’t need to be stored.

That being said, every year I find myself inspired in different ways, so my decor decisions vary year to year. This year I wanted to bring copper elements in for fall. I already own a lot of thrifted copper vessels, but I thought it’d be fun to incorporate some spooky skulls we’ve had for years. They’ve definitely seen better days and needed a facelift. When I saw this Copper Paint (with flecks of real copper), I knew I had to try it!

Gold Skulls

The best part about this paint was the fact that it had real copper in it. This meant it would patina like real copper, so I bought this solution to get an instant patina and got to work. Here’s what I used:

This was a very easy DIY. The skulls required 2 coats of the copper paint, and while the second coat was still wet, I sprayed the patina solution on generously. It was amazing to watch the patina appear over the course of 10 minutes! Here’s the finished product. I love how aged and authentic they look!
