Spring Front Door Refresh
It’s feeling like spring here in Florida and while I’m currently cursing the blooms because of my allergies, I can’t help but feel inspired by the season. Our front door hasn’t changed much over the years. We painted it red immediately after moving in and even though red is not a color I typically gravitate toward, I’ve always liked it on our house. Lately, though, I’ve been craving a change, and in my opinion changing your front door color can change the entire look of your house.
The above picture shows where we started. It definitely needed a refresh, so I said goodbye to the red door and got to work. We have a metal door so I definitely needed to prime beforehand. I used Kilz Primer and applied it with a foam roller and paint brush.
From here, I decided on Jasper by Sherwin Williams. I made sure to get it in a satin finish because I didn’t want to accentuate the imperfections in our door. Metal doors show every little dent when they’re shiny - in all honesty, I would’ve gone with a flat finish if I didn’t know what a pain it’d be to maintain outside. It took about 3 coats to cover completely. Dark colors almost always require more coats than lighter colors, so this was expected.
Then it was time to style the front porch! I found the perfect size welcome mat at HomeGoods for $12. Your mat should be about the same width as your front door. If you find one you love but it’s too small, you can always layer it over a larger rug to get it to the correct scale. I also found a $20 planter from Walmart (which I spray painted black) for my giant snake plant and topped it off with a thrifted brass planter and the white planter I already had. The basket on the door is no longer carried by Target, unfortunately.
If you watched my Instagram Stories, you may remember me saying I wanted to make the door hardware brass. I was also looking for a vintage brass door knocker, which I think would SING against this new door color. I’m holding off on the brass accents for now, mainly because I want to find a door knocker I LOVE, so I’ll keep you posted on that. Whenever I do find the right door knocker, I’ll also Rub n Buff the hardware, but for now I think it looks good black.
Is it feeling like spring where you live or are you still seeing snow? Either way, I hope this inspires you to get outside when it gets warm and refresh your space.
