Updating our Sideboard

Shortly after moving into our house, I found this amazing dresser at a thrift store for $60! It was solid wood and offered the perfect amount of storage we were looking for in a side board behind the couch. Originally, we painted it white, which has served us well (especially while our living room wall was teal), but I was ready for a change. I was able to dig up a picture of it before we refinished it.

We ended up cutting down the legs to make it for line up better with the back of our couch and then we filled it with endless amounts of serving dishes, table linens, candles, etc. These days it holds less fun hosting items and more crayons and construction paper, but we’ve loved it well nonetheless.

I’ve been itching for a change, and with the addition of our first faux beam in the living room, it felt like a good time to give this piece a face lift. I’ve been in love with this deep green/blue/gray color that’s been trending lately, so I went to Home Depot and decided on Behr Chalk Paint in the color Heritage Park . I also picked up a can of Behr Chalk Paint Finishing Wax in clear to seal it.

I love using chalk paint because you don’t need to prime and it provides full coverage in two coats pretty much no matter what. It’s so satisfying! I was also able to use a brush and foam roller without worrying about brush strokes because chalk paint smooths out as it dries. I know I’m not the first blogger to sing the praises of chalk paint, but there’s definitely a reason it’s become so popular.

I wanted to keep the original hardware because I loved it, but it felt like it needed something other than satin nickel, so I held a vote on Instagram and everyone voted for brass. I was about to pull the trigger on it, but something kept giving me pause. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good brass accent… but it didn’t feel right in the space.

After scouring Pinterest and pinning a few more inspiration pictures, I realized I was more drawn to black hardware on pieces painted this color… so I went rogue and grabbed a can of Rust-Oleum Universal Hammered Spray Paint in Black, which I happened to already have on hand. After numerous coats of spray paint, the side board was ready to re-assemble! Are you ready?

What do you think of the black? Would you have made a different choice? I just love a more tonal look right now. I am on the hunt for some vintage-y brass pulls to eventually replace the middle door pulls, but I love the way it looks right now!
