Ceramic Christmas Village Thrift Flip

White ceramic christmas village nestled in cedar garland, sitting on a bookshelf.

Raise your hand if you have a collection of classic ceramic Christmas houses sitting in a tote in your garage or attic right now, even though it’s almost Christmas, because they just don’t fit with the rest of your Christmas decor. Picture me raising my hand because thats was me for the past 5 years.

We inherited a ton of ceramic Christmas houses from Joe’s grandparents after they passed. They mean a lot to us because they meant a lot to them and I will always remember their Christmas village displays… but we lean more minimalistic in our decor, and as much as we love the sentiment of these houses, they just didn’t fit in. Every year I agonized over whether or not to put them out because, frankly, they’re too busy for my taste.

When I asked Joe if he would be on board with me painting them, he was shockingly enthusiastic about the idea! Let’s be honest - they hadn’t seen the light of day for a few years, so this at least gave them a fighting chance to be put on display this year.

When I tell you this was the easiest, most rewarding project I’ve done in a while, I mean it.

You will need:

  • Spray Paint

  • Ceramic houses

I used Rustoleum 2x (pictured below) in flat white, but you could use any color! Black or gold would also be beautiful. I would suggest a flat finish so it looks more like a minimal ceramic piece, but it’s not required.

Simply remove the lights and bring them outside to spray paint. My 4 houses used 1 can of spray paint, and they needed 3 coats.

Voila! I tucked mine onto our bookshelf with some small Target houses and faux cedar garland and I am obsessed with how minimal and high impact they are! I can promise you these babies will be making it out of the Christmas totes every year from now on.

DISCLAIMER - I realize many people collect these and cherish the hand painted details. If you are one of those people, I am not here to yuck your yum. We should all do what brings us joy in our own homes, so rock on with your colorful Christmas village and have a very Merry Christmas!
